Cycling Cinema

An evening of cycling related film/video/dvd has been suggested as a way of both raising the profile of the ride and raising funds at the same time.

This would be held in the school hall and perhaps follow the programme below.

a) Like all cinema shows it would begin with adverts

These of course would be either cycling related,or prominently feature bikes. Some examples might include – Guinness “fish on a bike” or Hovis “delivery bike”.There are a lot of examples on youtube,is it possible to use these?

b) Main family feature

Most probably Belleville Rendezvous.

c) Intermission

d) Second feature

Perhaps a more cycling related film,eg The Hell of the North.

Or maybe something of a more comedic nature,eg Jour de Fete.

Any suggestions are more than welcome-pop videos, film clips, classic comedy sketches, whatever springs to mind.

Whether the Weather???

Having tackled ice, lashing rain and blustery gales over the last three weeks, it looks from early observations as though it may?? be the turn of the funny white stuff come next Saturday morning.

Although having lived in Nottingham almost 20 practically snowless years the odds against it snowing everywhere else except here must be quite high.

Still it may be better to come to some consensus regarding riding in those sorts of conditions if the forecasters possibilties become probabilities.

Irish Hare Down (under)

Just thought I’d bring it to everyone’s attention in case you don’t read all the comments, but badly disguised in Irish Hare’s was that fact that he’ll be sunning himself with a bevy down under when May comes round. I have obviously twisted the facts there, but he will be in Oz teaching them about the great outdoors and I can’t help thinking of the phrase “teaching Grandma to suck eggs”.

Dave Jordan has also pulled out to support Su Yin In through her studies. A valiant decision. He has however volunteered to be in the supporting crew, big thanks Dave.

Tony Sheppard has decided to join in the fun, after all he has been riding out with us every Saturday so we are a net 1 down. If anyone has anyone in reserve please give them a shout so that we keep to each class adopting a rider.

Three Sheets to the Wind

Sorry I missed you guys this morning. I was in Bawtry, South Yorks, last night for a whisky tasting come Burns night.

I did the decent thing however and took my bike with me to cycle back from Blyth this morning. Problem was it’s North East of Beeston, so I had no respite from the wind whatsoever.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a point to point ride, I’d forgotten how much fun they are. There’s nothing quite like cycling somewhere rather than round in a circle. Today ended up feeling like a traditional 3 act play however.

Act 1 saw me heading off, nice and motivated, though it has to be said I was a little giddy from the previous night’s indulgences. The wind was strong but I could cope, I was chewing up the miles and home was getting closer.

Act 2 was the traditional darker period when the forces of evil look like they’re getting the upper hand over the plucky good guys. For me the wind was putting up a strong fight. It’s quite exposed on the A614 and I was either straight on into a gale, or leaning right into the wind to try and stay on. The most fun was when the wind was coming from front-right and I had to do both simultaneously. At least it was trying to blow me off the road rather than onto it.

Act 3 started as I got the Nottingham outskirts,  the wind eased a little, the sky brightened and Supergrass were banging out a chirpy number on my iPod. I was soon sitting down at home to some filling soup.

Only 40 miles I’m afraid, but they were hard fought. I did learn somethings this morning though.

  1.  Carrying a rucksack with shoes, clothes and other accouterments gets a bit uncomfortable after an hour
  2. If there’s a strong southerly wind on the day, given the trouble I had on my road bike, the Brompton is going to be very hard work
  3. Haggis and whisky are not great performance foods.

Anyone for Ashbourne on Saturday?

Thought I would put an offer out there for anyone who fancies a ride over to Ashbourne this Saturday. I plan to set off from Argos at 6:45 and head off on my well trodden route through Ilkeston, Keddleston and onto Ashbourne. This should be a brisk paced outing as the aim is to get back to NERO’s for the regular meet up time of 10:30.

If you are interested please let me know in the comment box, then I’ll know to wait around until you turn up. If others want to meet along the way please leave a comment.

Who is this ‘Tony’ guy?

dsc00121.jpgI was asked who ‘Tony’ is (he posted a comment on another thread announcing that he is riding to Paris with us ….) ‘Tony’ is the ‘Tony’ of ‘my mate Tony’ fame ( as referred to in previous posts of mine) He is the bloke who hangs around at the Plank and Leggitt on a Saturday morning. I have ridden with Tony for the last few years and we have done the Dragon Ride and The Epic together – I have been trying to get him to ride to Paris for a while so am pleased that he now can. He is famous for having a lot of aches and pains but then he might tell you all about this if he writes his profile …..!

Row,Row,Row your bike ?

If anyone is interested,Colin Hammond has access to 2 or 3 or perhaps more Concept2 rowing machines. These could be set up in the hall at school for an evenings training session (v.good for overall fitness levels).I’m sure that between us ,there are lots of sets of free weights gathering dust in spare bedrooms or garages, perhaps we could manage a DIY gym session? Maybe a bit of circuit training?anyway, just something a little different from pedalling a bike all the time.

Jaffa cake attack!

As I was riding over to Roundhill School this morning just before midday, I was crossing the junction at Sandiacre lights minding my own business when I suddenly felt this thump on my back. As I looked down I noticed a Jaffa cake had landed just below my bottom bracket. I picked up the said weapon and proceeded to hunt down the little chap who launched the missile at me. I have to say he was very accurate! I then rode through all the lunch time traffic to apprehend the ’scroat’ and challenge him as to why he thought it might be fun to knock the ‘Irish Hare’ off his bike.

Having exchanged pleasantries along the lines of…’You clucking trick’, in front of his mates I then pointed out that he might need surgery to remove the reminder of his lunch( Jaffa cakes) from a far off distant orifice if he did it again.

On reflection I was very calm although I would have taken great pleasure in force feeding him his lunch and then give him a wedgie because his underpants where showing! I wouldn’t have minded so much but they weren’t even real Jaffa cakes….Happy shopper brand, very Chav.

Has anyone else experienced this type of attack?

Clowns the whole lot of them!

Allez.
