One to put hairs on your chest

Hard, hilly and a bit of everything on this route. 125km and none of them wasted.

  • Steep hills, that go on and on – check
  • Super fast descents – check
  • Stretches of fast, good quality tarmac – check
  • Teeth rattling hurtles down dreadful tarmac – check
  • Gravel strewn roads with grass growing up the middle – check
  • Enough ascents to make you rue the descents as you know you’re going to have to go up again – check
  • Beautiful scenery, showcasing the best Derbyshire has to offer – check

I did this today and had a blast. It was hard work and my legs, back and shoulders all ache in ways I haven’t experienced for a good while.

At one point I recognised a hill (in Stanton Lees) from a Richard’s 100 miler last year. I also recognised the turning which prompted us to say ‘at least we’re not going up there!’ as we struggled up. Unfortunately today, my purple line took me up there.

It was also a good confirmation of my decision to go compact for Ventoux. Two hilly hours on a standard is fine, 4:30 to 5 hours and things really start to hurt.

I commend this route to the route library.

I also wonder if all you aspiring Cinglés might want to give this, or something like this, a go before le grand départ, especially on a sunny day like today. It’s going to be tough out there and this might be good preparation.

Mike’s E2E starts this Saturday!

I shall be blogging, oh sorry Tweeting, my trip at http://twitter.com/visionset

Travel down by 1 way van hire on Friday (5th) to Penzance, B&B booked at Sennen (a mile from Land’s End). B&B booked in Wick on the 14th and return trains booked the follwing day. Gives a 9 full day window and flexibility to divvy up the mileage as we see fit, since no intermediate accomodation is booked. Hopefully we can get the 900 miles done in 7 or 8 days, but the 6 I’d hoped for is definitely out. Wish us the wind on our backs, not too much rain and for my legs to hold up!

Summer Sun …

A civilised 8am start saw Maz, Sarah (Danaford-Knight not Bird!) and I heading for a very sunny and beautiful ride out to the VC Long Eaton time trial route. A quick zip around it and then home. You forget how lovely it is round there when you only go in the depths of winter!

Sarah D-K was getting to know how to move STI gear levers whilst coping with the inherent speed that a Trek Madone has.

Maz was riding her old faithful whilst trying to conjure up good reasons why she should go out and buy a Trek Madone!

I was enjoying riding my bike which due to my still having a virus has been little ridden but much serviced. Shivering and tired I had to go back to bed later. I fear Ventoux will be a cheese and wine trip for me.

Ceramic Wheel Bearings

Does anyone know a bit about ceramic wheel bearings?

Do you have to treat them the same as normal bearings and gease them or are they a one fit and forget (for a while)?
