The not so novice chain gang Tuesday 9th

To go alongside the ‘Novice Chain Gang’ and also leaving Argos at 8pm for a steady ride out to the start at the roundabout on the far side of Long Eaton.

Most seem to want to keep this ride at zone 3 but obviously higher when on the front. 30 second pulls and rolling off the front with a flick of the right elbow to indicate and down the inside like this (remember that is on a ‘Foreign’ road ).

Herve is very good at talking to the group and he should continue to do so but if you stay on the front too long or surge off then we can shout at you :-0

  1. Deal!

    I should be there.

Could the stronger riders maybe take minute (6o’) at the front? This way we cater for everyone?

  2. Sounds good to me – we wil just have to tell people if they ar enot as strong as they think they are!

  3. Tell me! I’ll tell you. I think that with time we will get smoother, but for now a few housekeeping rules should help us. Good idea.

  4. I’ll hope fully join you for the novice chain gang and see where we go from there.
    See you at 8pm Argos.

  7. Quite a ride….

It seemed we were a sizeable group heading out to Long Eaton having agreed we would revert to old habits and roll off the front to the right and down the line.

Some gaps were appearing on the way out and you must have wasted valuable energy working ‘on the front’ whilst in the middle of the group so I hope after the split at Long Eaton you were able to work on that.

Herve, Steven (was it Steven?!), Mark and I formed a fluid group that worked well together. Unfortunately Steven (Was it Steven?!) didn’t get to the right turn at Borrowash with us – hope you got with the second group or time trialled it? At the rise up to Risley it was hard going and again I noticed I was in zone 5 when on the front. At the right turn I was alone with Mark where it got surreal. I swear Mark didn’t have a light of any value and it’s dark down there. And the road winds – sharply. Mark seemd to be gaining Jedi like powers as he kept pushing the envelope. It was like a fairground ride.

At the turn Mark told me it was a transition stage – the peloton were 10 km back and we had 50 km to go – the race was on and we needed to work together. This was all very exciting except Mark kept talking to me about it or saying ‘Yeah baby’ as I turned myself inside out to keep up/keep it going. Needless to say Mark won ‘the sprint’.

  8. Hi Adrian/Mark, sorry for not keeping up with you. I didn’t feel great at all, just sluggish, and after catching up with you decided it was better to slow down and leave you break away as I was really not up for it tonight. I tried to wait for the second group but they never caught me up. A solo night. Must do better next week.

  9. We all have those nights Herve … avg speed 30.7 k (including the ride out but not the ride home) – avg HR 154 and I haven’t got my zone chart to hand to know what Zone that is – must be Zone 3 with my max being 192, I guess.

  10. The worse part in that I even managed to cramp up on the way home!! See you next week I hope. Off

  11. Us Novice guys enjoyed it. We had a few regroup stops on the 1st lap but after a while we started to get more fluid.

We are out a gain to get a few sessions done and get the pace of it. Came across a few nerds behind the wheel.

  12. Out next week, not tonight!

  13. @Adrian it was me with you for a while, it was very fluid for the time I was with you much better than last week, but I think you were going faster and I couldn’t hold on. I TT’d the rest of the course, didn’t catch you though Herve and I didn’t see the other guys either.

  14. I averaged 27.7km/h including the ride out, but not back. My average HR was 140 (Max is 168 I think ).

  15. i have no idea what my speed was, or my heart rate.
all i do know is that my “mind games” worked on adrian (chatting away about visualising us in a break on the tour de france whilst he was trying not to be sick) and i was able to pull off my maiden chain gang victory.
it obviously helps that 90% of the BCCRRT had chickened out due to the wet or the cold or something :)
can’t make it out on thursday fr the gang or social but wilL hopefully be out on tuesday next week.

p.s. Adrian seemed concerned by my jedi approach to riding in the dark (if you can’t see… speed up)
p.p.s. i was concerned by Herve’s lack of prowess – i’m expecting more from you next week!

  16. Did you run the curves faster than Thursday then? I think only Dan didn’t enjoy that bit.

    Comment by guyd — February 10, 2010 @ 3:17 pm

  17. there was a good tail wind on the curves and with only one light working it certainly felt faster!!!

  18. I am expecting more from myslef too!

I did doubt, for a second, Adrian; sorry Adrian. But the “Yeah baby, yeah!” was the big give away: THAT is Mark!
