After going out on Sunday, I have come to the conclusion I am not good at hills, what distances are people thinking of doing?

Phil M

9:08 Mon, 19 Jun 2017

The peaks are beautiful but those routes are horrible.
On saturday I will be mainly not doing any of them ;)

I'm doing the long, with the medium as a bail-out option in the event of bad weather (or bad legs!). Routes look great to me. 👌🏻

Whichever route I choose I guess after first hill or 2 I will most likely be riding solo, lantern rouge for me :D

Parental duties have messed with my plans, I'm out :-(

Long for me, looking forward to it.

richardb

I'll be doing the long (I think).

grayble

Longish

21:37 Tue, 20 Jun 2017

There is a closed road on the long route. It's a shame because its a lovely bit of road. https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=102918.0
could either go through Eyam instead and extend the route to Hathersage, but that would use a fairly busy road. Alternatively just cut that section off by taking the road from Foolow to Bretton

grayble

I am sorry I can't make this now. We are having renovation work completed at the office over the weekend and I need to be in. :-(
I was hoping that this would have been finished by now but alas not.

I will have a rethink, route wil likely change quite a lot. To keep it good since that is one of best bits. I will keep distances as fast folk have committed mentally there

mikew

8:59 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

If I'm reading that right, the closure is roughly at the 49-mile marker, meaning there's no route between Bretton & Abney (and we lose one climb and one long descent). I'd be fine with just diverting through Leam to Hathersage rather than making wholesale changes, but I'm happy to defer to Mike's greater knowledge.

richard_a

9:38 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

Correct. Leam quit good but will be reviewing if time. Hectic in hospital ;)

mikew

10:08 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

I can no longer make this as I have taxi duties I forgot I'd agreed to, should be back for an afternoon ride. Might do short or medium route (slowly) if anyone else fancies it, just not sure when though, about 1 or 2 ish?

Anyone know how long the road on the long route is closed for? I might try long route next Sat/Sun?

Phil M

12:48 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

Not sure but it's been closed for at least a year.

grayble

13:33 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

will new routes be posted up on here?

markn

15:15 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

Mike has made some amendments to avoid the road closure. I think Phil R is amending the routes. It was following the Bretton ridge then to Leam and to Hathersage avoiding the Grindleford road.

richardb

22:17 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

I managed to convert the gpx files to Strava routes (not as elegant as RWGPS, but plays better with my ancient Garmin). If need be I can edit the long route so there's a file for people to use.

richard_a

22:41 Wed, 21 Jun 2017

I have the route from Phil. But not sure what best to do with it. I have put it on ridewithgps as a public file, I think. Can someone see if they can see it. The file is called BCC-long-revised

grayble

7:09 Thu, 22 Jun 2017

Phil - if you're having problems, email me the route file and I'll put it up as a Strava route.

richard_a

8:57 Thu, 22 Jun 2017

This caused confusion, too many Phils :D

I think this is the revised route on RWGPS:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/22328826

My Strava version of the revised long route is here:
https://www.strava.com/routes/9278639
Note that this is *not* the official version, and may have some minor differences, but the file might work better for some people.

One comment: the revised route along the ridge goes along the ridge on Sir William Hill Road, and apparently a section of that road isn't paved. (I noticed this because Strava's planning tool wouldn't let me send the route along it!) I don't know that area at all, but it seems to be about a mile of rocky/gravel dirt track, mostly downhill. The images on Google Street View make it look marginal for road tyres, but I guess we can judge it when we see it. If we want to go around it's only a short detour (the Strava route linked above goes around it).

richard_a

10:59 Thu, 22 Jun 2017

No the route does not go down the rocky road. There is a bipass.

Phew just this in before the zonk

mikew

20:02 Thu, 22 Jun 2017

Thanks Mike - we'll go around.

richard_a

21:30 Thu, 22 Jun 2017

Sorry - I thought this revised route had come from Mike, but it was in fact Phil R's stab at a get around. Phil has now sent me Mike's edit, which I have sent to Rich Alexander (It' only slightly different). It's been tricky because Mike has WiFi issues in hospital.

The correct .tcx file for the revised route can be downloaded here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ivueajflgi89pe/BCC-sportive-2017-long_Revised.tcx?dl=0

It should match the Strava route I posted above, but there may be some minor discrepancies. This is the "official" version though.

Official good ☺️

11:40 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

Just wondered if any steadier riders had made plans. Over this terrain I will not average 24kph/15mph. Quite happy and fully expecting to solo around the short. Considering 'bending the rules' and taking the car to Stanley Common to save 24km and do the medium.

Now the late mods are sorted can some one stick them on the Facebook site please. Let me know I will make you admin. I hope this will be interclub. Needs to be asap obviously. Cheers

You can add the file/s so they appear here

Thanks

mikew

I've added it i think. If someone could give a quick check. Cheers
Have fun

See you at 8.

19:09 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

Check your gearing dude. TT gearing no good for tomorrow.

grayble

19:45 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

Pretty sure I'm 34-25. Do I need 28?

richardb

20:08 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

A super strong TT monster like you will be fine (me, I'd stick a 28 on).

grayble

20:22 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

ciccione

20:24 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

George

20:45 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

Set off with us George - by the time we get to Curbar we'll have talked you into the long. ;-)

richard_a

21:35 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

....or be joining you on the medium.

richardb

21:57 Fri, 23 Jun 2017

Now there's an idea 😀

markn

By the time you get to Curbar you will be on the medium with me because you will have gone the wrong way!

George

Going to give it a miss, riding tomorrow with wife on her first 50 +her parents here for lunch so should really be back for that. And no ones going to do the medium anyway :(

Superb day out. 😀

richard_a

Great photo, even better the right way round.
No doubt Mike's routes lived up to their billing!

macca

19:44 Sat, 24 Jun 2017

I think the route exceeded expectations. Mike somehow managed to create a route through the Peak with lots of lovely lanes but also a succession of excellent descents, some that seemed to go on forever. Big smiles - and grimaces too of course.
