Ethan Squires adds strength to our Youth Squad

Beeston Cycling Club Youth Race Team are delighted that Ethan Squires is joining our squad as a 2nd year under 14 rider.

Ethan started riding bikes from an early age. At the age of 8, as soon as he had built up some confidence, he joined Witham Wheelers for Go Ride sessions in Grantham. This gave him his first racing experience on a bike competing in the popular Lincolnshire Go Race sessions at Fulbeck Go Kart track.

With a taste for racing, Ethan started to compete over the next couple of years at all the local circuits.
At the first opportunity at the age of 9, he signed up to the Go Ride cluster sessions on the velodrome at Derby. Over the next few years, he progressed through each level before completing his Track accreditation at the age of 12.

Alongside the indoor track, Ethan also took the opportunity to start competing in local grass track events during the summer. He has been part of Witham Wheelers Grass Track team that competes in the Inter Lincolnshire Club Competition at Heckington Show since the age of 10, winning several of the Omnium disciplines at different age categories.

2020 was destined to be the year for Ethan to step up his racing participation. It started well actively competing in many rounds of the Derby Arena Youth Track League with positive results against some stronger and older riders. Following on from this he was entered into his first National Youth event at Manchester Velodrome but unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic ended any hopes of competing in this and his planned participation in more Regional events.

2020 was also due to be the year for Ethan to get his first taste of riding on the continent. The COVID-19 pandemic put paid to a planned family holiday to the Alps to tackle some alpine climbs and also take in watching some stages of the Tour de France in the area at the time.

Highlights

  • Podium positions in Lincolnshire Circuit Racing League at Yarborough
  • Podium Positions in Various Go Green Grass Track Omnium Races
  • Various Circuit races at New College, Harvey Haddon, Mallory Park, Milton Keynes, Darley Moor

Looking towards a brighter 2021
Ethan is delighted to be joining the Beeston CC Race Team, as well as getting a formal structure to his training through The Bryan Steel Academy. He is looking forward to meeting and training with his new team mates and finding role models within the club to help him develop as a cyclist and person.

Ethan and his new team mates remain very positive and their supportive training programme at home is serving them well to hone their fitness and enable them to seize successes when competitive racing finally starts again in 2021.
