Oliver Sewell aspiring for great things

Oliver Sewell is an under 16 rider with Beeston Cycling Club’s Race Team Aspire Programme which helps support riders to make the transition into the BCC Race Team squad.

Oliver made the decision to leave U15 football and focus on researching for a local cycling team to join. Beeston Cycling Club appealed as they had a really good youth and junior section and an added attraction was that the Bryan Steel Cycling Academy sorked in partnership with Beeston CC. Since training with Bryan, Oliver’s performance and fitness on the bike has improved a lot and his training numbers are increasing week on week.

Oliver started cycling at the beginning of the first lockdown in March 2020, as part of his daily exercise due to the early postponement of the football season. Oliver started to find a love for cycling when on rides with his friends and exploring new routes. Oliver started from the beginning using his dad’s old road bike, a borrowed helmet and basic trainers, initially going out on 10-mile rides, but quickly increasing the distances.

Once lockdown restrictions were eased, Oliver started going out on group rides at the weekends with his dad and his cycling group, and he soon began to realise he was quite good at it. As his passion grew Oliver wanted to take part in some events, so he started doing local TT events with increased improvements to his times.

Oliver really enjoyed Time Trialling and this early success has given him the ambition to compete in the National Time Trials. Currently Oliver is training hard with Bryan’s training programme and focussing on building his fitness and race craft to be ready for the 2021 season.

Goals – To race well, join the BCC Race Team Squad and be a competitive team player.

Aspirations – Be competitive in National Events and to become a professional cyclist.

Looking towards 2021 with great optimism
Oliver is excited to build up his racing experience with the aim to join the BCC Race Team Squad, as well as getting a formal structure to his training through The Bryan Steel Academy.

Oliver and his team mates remain very positive during Covid and their supportive training programme at home is serving them well to hone their fitness and enable them to seize successes when competitive racing finally starts again in 2021.
