what sort of distance is this? 70-80 miles? I'm guessing reasonably flat, so are we looking at 17/18 mph average? My geography is a bit shite, what is is VoB?

This end of Rutland water is anything but flat! As soon as you go South over the VOB ridge it's lumpy all the way to Oakham. Best local area outside the Peak though!

Lumpy indeed. Will post a route tonight. I know a nice way down there (I think, having ridden it twice). Way back is open in my mind; need to look at the map. Looking at a "good" average, yes, over the distance.

Nick
VoB is Vale of Belvoir, the area where the road race was last weekend, as Mike said once over the ridge past Belvoir Castle it is undulating.

Superb ride on nice and quiet lanes, and in the sun all morning, with Dom and Jon (and Graham at the start who wishes, I am sure, he had come with us all the way!).
103 Mi in slightly over 6 hours (maybe 6hr15, need to check).
Easy cross country route to Oakham which we reached in about 2.5 hours. Most pleasant coffee stop in Oakham before heading North to Wymondham (sadly a slight navigational mistatke took us West for a short while and we needed to correct the course!) and discover the great sight that is Belvoir Castle from the South - South-West side. Then a fast run into the VoB. At 5 and a bit hours the wheel threatened to come off the cart for me and I am glad my companions allowed me a quick stop in Ruddington after I had laboured for a short while, for a coke refill stop and a scone & jam, which transformed the end of my (our) ride. I was flying thereafter and only regretted not to have asked to stop earlier.
Thanks guys. A cracking day and the third nice ride in as many days for me. Will sleep tight tonight!

No gpx Liam, sorry. I read the map (before), used my local knowledge of the area and printed the place names on a long narrow band of paper to help my memory and off we went (I gave the same list to the others in the group); it is very much the list in the OP; we took one wrong turn and recovered quite soon; the region is well signed.
I didn't have time to play with my Garmin to be honest.
Maybe Dom recorded the route? I'll ask him. It will contain one obvious detour.

Love that method, my kind of route planning. Cant beat good old maps and reading road signs!

Brilliant ride, going through some glorious villages on the way to Oakham. Love to do it again, soon, if anyone is interested.....

I managed to download the gpx file, although it wants to download as an .htm so I had to change that. That is possibly why the map isn't showing.

@jonm I was going to suggest to do it in reverse later on this month... I am happy to introduce some variations. Oakham - home is a very nice route as it is mapped.
